Luke Clifton joins ATA Board as alliance shifts focus to leaders

Thu, 27th Nov 2025

Macquarie Technology Group has responded positively to a constitutional change by the Australian Telecommunications Alliance (ATA) that will see only leaders from telecommunications companies appointed to its Board, reinforcing the focus on sector expertise.

Board composition

The new policy results in Luke Clifton, Group Executive at Macquarie Technology Group, joining the ATA's Board. The change underlines the organisation's intent to ensure its leadership reflects senior decision-makers directly involved in the telecommunications field.

This adjustment comes at a time when the ATA is positioned as a key body for industry standards as well as sector development. The alliance works on issues including national connectivity, the promotion of industry standards, and the advocacy of technological development within Australia's telecommunications sector.

Leadership experience

Clifton brings more than two decades of experience in telecommunications and managed services. His career spans leadership in secure networking, SD-WAN, SASE, and cyber security services. He has a reputation for focusing on customer engagement and operational transformation during periods of industry change.

Throughout his career, Clifton has worked with a variety of organisations, including government agencies, small and medium-sized businesses, not-for-profit entities, and large enterprises. His experience is expected to inform ATA's ongoing priorities and provide a broader perspective on market concerns and opportunities.

Industry focus

The ATA's decision is framed as a commitment to fostering strong leadership from within the telecommunications sector. It comes amid increasing industry emphasis on customer service, innovation, and meeting both regulatory and technical standards across Australia's rapidly evolving digital landscape.

"I'm honoured to be joining the Board of the ATA at this important time for the sector. I've been a staunch and passionate advocate for great service delivery and innovation in the telecommunications industry throughout my entire career," said Luke Clifton, Group Executive, Macquarie Technology Group.

"At Macquarie Telecom, our entire ethos is built around being the benchmark for great technology and customer service since our inception in the early 1990s. The change of Board composition to include only the most senior leaders from our industry is a strong signal of intent that we, as a critical sector for Australia, are committed to being the best we can be for our customers, partners, and stakeholders. I look forward to working closely with my industry peers to support the industry in every way I can," said Clifton.
