Geotab Vitality launches behaviour rewards to boost fleet safety
Geotab and Vitality have formed a joint venture to introduce a new driver safety and behavioural rewards solution, Geotab Vitality, in Australia and New Zealand.
The joint venture brings together Geotab's telematics and AI-driven collision analytics with Vitality's behavioural science platform. The solution is fully integrated into the MyGeotab platform, providing drivers with personalised weekly goals derived from analysis of their previous performance. Drivers can earn points for improvements, which can then be exchanged for tangible rewards such as coffee or gift cards through an in-app rewards marketplace.
Behaviour-based rewards
According to Geotab, the new model addresses road safety by encouraging lasting, positive change in driving behaviour. Instead of traditional methods that focus on penalties for poor driving, Geotab Vitality rewards improvements and consistently safe habits across all skill levels within a fleet.
Geotab reports that global pilot programmes have demonstrated a 15% improvement in driving behaviour within the first month and a 55% reduction in insurance claims versus national averages. The company suggests these results show potential for significant cost reductions and improved safety outcomes.
Collisions represent a major financial burden for fleet operators. The Australian Government estimates road crashes cost AUD $27 billion annually, impacting both communities and organisations.
Personalisation and analytics
Drivers and fleet managers can monitor daily progress towards goals, with points tracked using Geotab's predictive collision risk model. The system encourages gradual, continuous improvement, aligning with Vitality's behavioural science approach.
The reward-centric system is designed to improve engagement and retention among professional drivers, which the companies highlight as an ongoing challenge for the sector. The joint solution also aims to provide fleets with a single, integrated platform to manage behavioural change, accrue savings, and promote safety.
"Traditional safety programs react to mistakes. We are building a system that prevents them," said David Brown, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Geotab. "By combining our predictive AI with Vitality's incentive model, we can identify risk and encourage safer habits before an incident occurs. The future of fleet safety is positive reinforcement - eliminating risk, not just managing it."
The companies believe this proactive model can help reduce accident rates, improve overall well-being for drivers, and address skills shortages in the industry by offering a supportive rather than punitive approach to safety.
Industry collaboration
The joint offering leverages Vitality's large-scale behavioural science expertise. Vitality's approach combines technology, analytics, and a range of incentives to motivate safer and healthier behaviours. The collaboration is positioned as a step towards creating shared value for all stakeholders in the transport sector.
"Through our joint venture with Geotab, we are creating shared value - safer roads for communities, lower costs for fleets, and meaningful rewards for drivers who perform well," said Francois Theron, Deputy CEO of Vitality Drive International. "Together, we're tackling one of the most pressing challenges in transport: improving driver behaviour to make our roads safer for everyone."
The platform adopts a reward-first model, which the firms describe as a reversal of the established paradigm for fleet safety where penalties and negative consequences are typically used to influence behaviour. Instead, all drivers, regardless of experience, are eligible to participate and benefit from the reward scheme.
National context
With road crashes causing billions in annual costs and broad societal consequences, transport and fleet operators in Australia and New Zealand continue to face growing pressure to deploy more effective safety and retention programmes.
The companies state that through data analytics and a behavioural incentive scheme, Geotab Vitality offers fleets of all sizes a new tool to improve driver safety and reduce operational risk, while also providing drivers with recognition and material benefits for their efforts.
Pilot outcomes from abroad, according to Geotab and Vitality, show measurable improvements in driver behaviour, suggesting possible benefits for local fleets where the programme is now being rolled out.
