BAI secures 3.8 GHz spectrum to expand private networks

BAI Communications has announced its successful application to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for licensed spectrum in the 3.8 GHz band, which will support the expansion of its private mobile network offerings.

The new spectrum complements BAI's existing mmWave spectrum holdings and includes up to 50MHz allocated in major metropolitan and regional centres across Australia. The company aims to utilise this spectrum to enhance its telecommunications systems, particularly for private mobile networks.

The allocation of the 3.8 GHz band was achieved through an area-wide apparatus licence, which uses a grid-based system covering all of Australia. This approach grants BAI bandwidth in key urban and regional locations where industries are poised to benefit from enhanced private connectivity solutions. "This spectrum will be a key enabler for deployment and operation of private mobile networks, especially in metropolitan areas where non-mobile network operator entities have now been granted access to scarce 5G compatible spectrum, usually reserved for mobile network operators," stated Stephen Farrugia, Chief Technology Officer at BAI Communications.

BAI Communications has a proven track record in delivering private mobile networks internationally, collaborating across varying industries including ports, logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity. The acquisition of these licences positions BAI to extend similar services within Australia, leveraging the expertise of its sister company Boldyn Networks, known for operating private mobile networks in Europe. "We are working extensively with our partners, which include leading vendors and system integrators in the industry, to provide end-to-end solutions. We are already seeing significant interest in the ports and transport sectors. This is a major inflection point to enable private mobile network adoption in Australia," explained Nick Gurney, Director of Telecommunications at BAI Communications.

Private mobile networks offer dependable, secure, and focused connectivity solutions, addressing the unique needs of sectors like ports and manufacturing environments that require robust network infrastructure. BAI obtained this spectrum through an application-based allocation process by ACMA. This process evaluates applicants' spectrum requirements against established policy objectives and allocation principles, differing from a conventional auction-based system. BAI applied for the spectrum during the initial allocation window in May, with the outcome finalised in November.

BAI Communications plans to harness this spectrum, alongside additional regional spectrums, to provide specialised networks that boost customer organisation efficiencies and contribute to growth in Australian industries.
