City of Parramatta is using an integrated video and analytics platform from Milestone Systems to support public safety operations, improve traffic visibility, and manage security across more than 110 facilities as the city expands.

Parramatta, often referred to as Sydney's second CBD, is undergoing major urban development across residential, commercial, and infrastructure sectors. Growth has increased operational demands around public safety, traffic management, and coordination between city systems.

Council leaders consolidated crime prevention and building security operations under a single operational model after identifying limitations with disconnected systems spread across multiple sites.

At the centre of the deployment is Milestone XProtect VMS, integrated with BriefCam analytics, access control systems, alarm management platforms, building management tools, and community booking systems.

Operators within the City's security operations centre can monitor thousands of camera feeds through a unified interface. Analytics functions also support investigations, operational oversight, and event monitoring.

Traffic visibility

BriefCam analytics are being used to monitor traffic flow, support post-event investigations, and improve situational awareness during public events across Parramatta's CBD.

Operators can search large volumes of video footage to identify incidents, locate vulnerable individuals, and review activity across different parts of the city.

Integrated alarm management links triggered alerts with live camera feeds. Operators can automatically surface video views when alarms activate and navigate facilities using visual floor plan overlays.

Access control records can also be correlated with video footage in real time. According to council officials, this has reduced the need for operators to switch between separate systems during incidents.

"We can't expect operators to know every building across 110+ sites, so we designed the system around clarity and context - the platform brings the information to the operator, not the other way around," said Mohamed Al Salemi, Security Platform Specialist, City of Parramatta.

Unified systems

Deployment of the platform extends beyond traditional security operations and forms part of broader smart city initiatives across Parramatta.

Automated workflows have been integrated into community facility bookings. Residents can reserve venues online while connected systems automatically manage access control, lighting, HVAC activation, alarm management, and video verification processes.

Council officials said the integrated approach supports operational coordination while reducing manual administration across council-managed facilities.

Parramatta is also preparing for additional hybrid cloud deployments through Milestone Arcules following trials across several locations.

Planned upgrades are expected to support legacy system modernisation while reducing reliance on on-premise infrastructure.

Privacy measures

Parramatta has also trialled brighter AI technology to anonymise individuals who are not relevant to investigations in exported surveillance footage.

Council representatives said the capability supports privacy-by-design principles while preserving evidentiary integrity for investigations and operational reviews.

Long-term plans centre on creating a connected operational environment that supports public safety, infrastructure management, and city-wide coordination as Parramatta continues to expand.
