Brisbane Invests AUD $8 Million in Smart Curbside Cameras

Mon, 2nd Jun 2025

Brisbane City Council has extended its collaboration with SenSen to enhance the city's curbside management through upgraded hardware and advanced software systems.

The contract extension, valued at up to AUD $8 million over four years, includes improvements to mobile enforcement technologies and the deployment of SenPIC, SenSen's pole-insertable fixed camera system, on a larger scale across the city.

City curb spaces are experiencing growing demand due to urban densification, leading to increased competition for access to loading zones, school drop-off areas, and rideshare pickups. Traditional enforcement approaches, reliant on manual patrols or GPS-dependent systems, have faced challenges, especially in central business districts where tall buildings can interfere with GPS accuracy.

Brisbane's adoption of SenSen's technologies reflects a shift towards AI-driven compliance and mobility strategies designed to better reflect the way curbside space is used today. The SenPIC camera system distinguishes itself by being compatible with existing pole infrastructure, requiring minimal installation disruption compared to previous fixed enforcement solutions that often demanded bespoke fixtures or substantial streetscape modification.

The fixed cameras supply high-quality video evidence, supporting automated enforcement at a reduced operational cost. They integrate with SenSen's visual positioning system, which improves enforcement reliability in GPS-compromised areas by matching real-time street images with digital models of the city.

The contract builds on a working relationship between SenSen and Brisbane City Council that now approaches a decade. Dr Subhash Challa, CEO of SenSen, said, "This is another great example of the long-term relationships we've built with cities globally. Our collaboration with Brisbane City Council extends a ten-year relationship for an additional four years. It's proof that long-term, value-creating partnerships are at the core of our strategy".

The agreement mirrors similar developments with other municipalities, including Calgary's nine-year contract extension with SenSen signed in late 2024.

Although enforcement remains a central element of this contract, the implications extend into broader city management. SenSen's systems gather real-time data, enabling councils to analyse parking compliance around schools, assess commercial zone overstay patterns, and monitor activity spikes during major events. This information can inform strategies to ease congestion, plan infrastructure, and promote safety.

The council's investment in digital infrastructure comes amid preparations for major future events, such as the Olympic Games, positioning Brisbane to respond to increased urban activity and transportation demands with data-driven strategies.
