Optus to deliver faster NBN speeds & new plan perks from 2025
Optus has announced that it will be rolling out faster National Broadband Network (NBN) speeds at no additional cost to eligible customers from September 2025.
These speed increases will begin for hundreds of thousands of customers on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections who are currently on Fast, Superfast or Ultrafast wholesale access speed plans.
The initiative comes as part of NBN Co's national speed upgrade programme aimed at providing improved internet connections for Australian households, particularly to support activities like streaming, gaming, and remote working.
Plan structure changes
In anticipation of the speed upgrades, Optus implemented changes to its NBN plan structure in July 2025, reducing the number of plans from nine to five. The company has stated that this step was taken to simplify the selection process for customers and better match their internet needs.
From September 2025, customers on the Optus Home Fast plan will see typical busy period speeds increase from 100/18Mbps to 500/43Mbps. For those on the Home Superfast plan, speeds will increase from 250/22Mbps to 680/43Mbps. Customers on the Home Ultrafast plan will experience an increase in typical busy period upload speeds from 800/40Mbps to 800/80Mbps.
Eligibility and upgrades
The upgrade will apply automatically to eligible customers on FTTP or HFC connections. Customers who use Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Building (FTTB), or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) may qualify for a FTTP upgrade through the NBN fibre upgrade programme, with standard installation costs covered in eligible areas.
There is no action required from customers eligible for the automatic upgrade. Optus has indicated that the speed improvements will be rolled out progressively, starting in mid-September 2025.
Product features and incentives
Optus also announced additional features intended to provide added value to customers. Those who prefer to use their own modem can continue on a month-to-month basis. Alternatively, customers may receive a Wi-Fi 6 modem at no extra cost by remaining on an eligible NBN plan for 24 months. This offer comes with the option to cancel and pay out the modem at any time, provided the bring-your-own modem is compatible.
Additional incentives include a bundle saving offer, where customers who add an NBN plan alongside a new or existing eligible postpaid mobile or connected device plan receive a bundle bonus of AUD $15 per month for 12 months. On Promo and Ultrafast NBN plans, subscribers can also access a monthly content credit of up to AUD $20 towards their choice of streaming subscriptions when managed through the SubHub platform.
Statement from Optus
Anthony Shiner, Chief Customer Officer, Optus, said:
"Australians want faster, more reliable internet and we're proud that many Optus customers will be among the first to enjoy these speed upgrades at no extra cost. With high-performance modems and streamlined, great value nbn plans, we're excited to help shape the future of home connectivity."
Customer guidance
Optus has advised that speeds depend on the specific plan purchased and the connection type available at the property. Customers eligible for the speed boost are those with FTTP or HFC infrastructure and who are currently on Optus Fast, Superfast, or Ultrafast plans. These customers will begin to receive the upgraded speeds from 15 September 2025.
The figures for typical busy period speeds provided for the new NBN speed tiers are based on Optus's estimates using available speed data at this time. The company notes that, once more speed data is available following the full rollout, typical busy period speeds may be updated accordingly.
The opportunity for a $0 FTTP upgrade is also subject to eligibility based on location and installation type, and terms and conditions apply as detailed in Optus's product information.
