McConnell Dowell speeds up construction with pop-up cellular connectivity

Wed, 31st Jul 2024

Challenge
The dynamic nature of McConnell Dowell's construction projects demands rapid deployment of secure and reliable connectivity. Traditional wired connections often involve lengthy lead times and lack the flexibility needed to adapt to ever-changing project landscapes. Setting up wired infrastructure can significantly delay project kick-off, and once in place, these solutions can be inflexible as project needs evolve. Additionally, with traditional networking solutions, the IT team had been required to troubleshoot issues at remote sites in person, which was costly and took a lot of time and travel.

Solution
Managed service provider Wevo worked with McConnell Dowell to implement Cradlepoint's NetCloud Service with ruggedised cellular routers. This eliminates the need for extensive infrastructure installation, enabling McConnell Dowell to set up networks quickly and efficiently, getting projects online faster. Managed through Wevo, NetCloud Manager offers single pane of glass management, enabling remote visibility, configuration, and troubleshooting across all deployed Cradlepoint routers, eliminating the need for on-site IT presence for routine maintenance.

"The fast-paced nature of construction requires us to turn on connectivity solutions with very little notice, and Cradlepoint provides us that ability. Its speed of deployment and simplicity allows us to hit the ground running on our projects, which is fantastic for our construction teams and our customers." - Ross Johnston, IT Site Service Manager, McConnell Dowell

Benefits
Faster connectivity deployment times mean construction projects can start running sooner without waiting for internet access to be established. Reduced operational costs are achieved by eliminating the need for IT personnel to travel to sites for setup, monitoring, and maintenance. The ability to be carrier agnostic is a significant benefit, as the nature of McConnell Dowell's business means that it is able to switch carriers based on where projects require connectivity. Looking ahead, MCD is partnering with Wevo to explore Cradlepoint's in-vehicle solutions for an upcoming set of construction projects in South Australia.
