Main Roads WA launches app to aid vehicle inspections

Main Roads Western Australia has implemented a mobile application developed by Motorola Solutions to enhance the safety and productivity for its heavy vehicle inspectors.

The new mobile application provides Western Australia's transport inspectors with instant access to driver and transport company information associated with heavy vehicles. This advancement allows inspectors to issue digital notices during vehicle inspections, thereby streamlining the entire process.

The RCMS app is already in use by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) across Australia, where it has significantly reduced the average roadside intercept time from about 35 minutes to just 10 minutes. The reduction in time is attributed to the elimination of paper-based forms and the integration of necessary data, which strengthens road safety for drivers navigating between Western Australia and the eastern states of Australia.

Rita Saffioti, Minister for Transport and Deputy Premier of Western Australia, emphasised the benefits of the app, stating, "We know the majority of operators in the heavy vehicle industry are safe and compliant and that it's only a small cohort of high-risk companies and drivers that put themselves and the community at risk." She further explained, "By leveraging heavy vehicle compliance and enforcement data, Main Roads WA can keep all road users safe while preventing damage to the state's road infrastructure."

Since its rollout, the RCMS has helped NHVR compliance officers to expedite their roadside operations, ensuring that safety measures are maintained efficiently and effectively.

The app operates on the same public safety mobility platform utilised by Western Australia's Police officers, which is used to handle emergency calls. This system is lauded for its ability to assist officers in responding promptly and safely to public emergencies.
