UBH Group earns ISO 19443, a nuclear sector milestone

Yesterday

UBH Group has become the first company in the Southern Hemisphere to earn the ISO 19443 certification, marking a significant achievement in the nuclear supply chain sector.

This certification is known for its rigorous quality management standards specific to organisations that supply products and services to nuclear facilities. It is said to highlight UBH Group's dedication to safety, quality, and excellence, which are viewed as crucial components of Australia's involvement in the AUKUS security pact.

The certification is expected to play a pivotal role in Australia's nuclear agenda, which includes a proposed rotational presence at HMAS Stirling of one UK and up to four US nuclear-powered submarines, collectively known as the Submarine Rotational Force - West (SRF-West).

Jeff Batten, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of UBH Group, highlighted the importance of the certification. "Achieving ISO 19443 certification is an important step that allows us to begin to support the nuclear supply chain here in Australia. Everything from nuclear reactor components down to the adhesives and bolts used around them requires an extra level of diligence," he stated.

Jeff Batten further emphasised the urgency of preparation for SRF-West, noting that the certification process takes 12 to 18 months, while SRF-West is anticipated to commence in 2027. He remarked, "Those submarines will need a supply chain to maintain them, and right now we are not ready. We need the entire supply chain to mobilise and align with this international standard to ensure Australia's readiness."

Mark Schneider, Chief Nuclear Officer at UBH and a nuclear engineer with extensive experience from the US Navy, spoke about the broader implications of the achievement. "This accomplishment is not just about UBH. It's about inspiring Australia's SMEs to rise to the challenge and engage in the global nuclear supply chain," he explained.

Schneider highlighted the importance of various components in building a robust nuclear ecosystem, saying, "From adhesives to specialised tools, every component matters in creating a safe, efficient, and world-class nuclear ecosystem."

UBH Group is urging Australia's small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to begin ISO 19443 certification to support the country's nuclear agenda. This call comes amidst concerns about gaps in Australia's existing supply chain, which must be addressed to align with international nuclear standards.

UBH Group, since its founding in 2020, has significantly increased its workforce and revenue, establishing itself as a leader in sovereign capabilities. The recent ISO 19443 certification is another step as the company aims to contribute to Australia's emerging nuclear capabilities.
