Shark launches the 3-in-1 upright vacuum in Australia

Shark has launched the PowerDetect Transformer Upright Vacuum in Australia and New Zealand. The corded machine combines upright, stick and handheld formats in one product.
The launch marks Shark's entry into a part of the vacuum market long defined by single-format designs. The machine is intended to reduce the need for separate vacuums for floors, stairs, upholstery and other household tasks.
The PowerDetect Transformer replaces the traditional upright vacuum hose with a design that shifts between formats at the press of a button. In upright mode, it is aimed at larger floor areas, while stick and handheld modes are intended for tighter spaces and above-floor cleaning.
According to Shark, the handheld unit clicks back into place and empties debris into the main dust cup automatically. The machine remains corded in all three modes, setting it apart from many newer vacuum launches focused on battery-powered cleaning.
Sensor-led design
A central part of the product is a set of sensors that adjust cleaning functions during use. Shark said the system can identify floor surfaces and change suction and brushroll speed, detect dirt and increase power when needed, and boost suction near edges and walls.
The vacuum also includes blue LED lighting to highlight dust and debris on the floor. It cleans in both forward and reverse and uses two brushrolls for carpets and hard floors.
Hair management is another focus. Shark said the brushroll system is designed to reduce hair wrap from pet hair and long hair, a common complaint among vacuum users.
Filtration is built into all three cleaning modes. The product includes HEPA filtration and a sealed system intended to trap dust and allergens.
Consumer habits
Shark is launching the machine into a market where households often own more than one type of vacuum. The company cited industry data showing that households across Australia and Oceania buy the equivalent of roughly one vacuum cleaner every three years, reflecting demand for different machines for different tasks.
That pattern has helped create distinct product categories, with upright vacuums used for deep cleaning, stick vacuums for everyday use, and handheld units for stairs, furniture and cars. The Transformer is positioned as an attempt to combine those roles in one appliance.
Charlene Dizon, Senior Shark Product Manager, SharkNinja APAC, outlined the thinking behind the launch.
"For years, consumers have had to choose between the power of an upright vacuum and the flexibility of a stick or handheld. We challenged ourselves to remove that compromise. The PowerDetect Transformer is one complete cleaning system designed to adapt to every room, every surface and every mess around the home," Dizon said.
Corded choice
The decision to keep the machine corded is notable at a time when many rivals have shifted product development and marketing towards cordless devices. Cordless vacuums offer portability, but they are also limited by battery life and can lose power as charge declines.
Shark's approach suggests there is still room in the market for mains-powered products, particularly for larger homes or longer cleaning sessions. By retaining a cord, the company is betting that some consumers will trade mobility for uninterrupted runtime and consistent suction.
Early feedback cited by Shark came from users in the US, where the product has already launched. One reviewer said: "This vacuum is incredibly impressive with 3-in-1 functionality. It can be upright, stick, and handheld in a few seconds and is easy to reassemble and disassemble as needed."
A second reviewer focused on the product's build and movement around the home, saying: "Its construction is solid but very versatile to move it throughout the house."
The launch adds to competition in home cleaning appliances, where brands are increasingly trying to stand out through format changes, automation and sensor-based features rather than raw suction claims alone. The PowerDetect Transformer Upright Vacuum is now on sale through Shark's online channels and major retailers.
