Lumea launches fibre in the sky for high-speed data

Today

Lumea is now offering spectrum sharing through its 'fibre in the sky' network, promising reduced costs for high-speed and reliable data services for businesses, governments, and industries in Australia.

Executive General Manager Craig Stallan commented on the new offering: "Lumea Spectrum revolutionises telco connectivity by maximising network efficiency, improving coverage, and reducing deployment and infrastructure costs for our government, enterprise, and wholesale customers." He further mentioned that Lumea's approach "ensures our telecommunications customers experience faster, more reliable data connections, with greater flexibility managing their bandwidth requirements over the leased spectrum."

The spectrum-sharing initiative will provide the benefits of dark fibre without the associated high costs, offering customers flexibility in their choice of transponder technology. Lumea's 'fibre in the sky' optical ground wire (OPGW) network operates across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, with additional connectivity through partner providers in Queensland and Victoria. This network facilitates a wide array of data services and ensures network diversity and reliability.

Lumea Spectrum's capabilities include high-speed regional and inter-capital connectivity, benefiting customers colocating in data centres by granting them complete control over a virtual fibre segment via Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, achieving speeds over 400Gbps. "Essentially, our customers use their own telecommunications equipment which is located in data centres to securely access our OPGW network capacity," Mr Stallan explained.

Customers can leverage Lumea's existing fibre assets at a lower incremental cost with real-time control and monitoring opportunities. A notable implementation of this service is the recently installed inter-capital connection between Sydney and Melbourne for Titan Telecoms, a Queensland-based telecommunications company. Titan Telecoms has secured spectrum to offer 400Gbps-native Wavelength Services via its transponders, connecting 23 data centres along Australia's eastern coast.

"Lumea is really proud to have successfully tested and installed Spectrum for Titan Telecoms," Mr Stallan expressed, highlighting the capability to provide customers like Titan Telecoms with "high-speed, cost-effective, and reliable telecommunications solutions."

Nic Tippelt, Chief Technology Officer of Titan Telecoms, praised the partnership with Lumea: "Titan Telecoms is proud to be Lumea's strategic partner, enabling high-capacity, low-latency transmission across Lumea's extensive telecommunications assets." Tippelt noted that the infrastructure, supported by Adtran TeraFlex hyperscale transponders and underpinned by Lumea Spectrum, strengthens their offering of services exceeding speeds of 400Gbps between major cities.

Ciena's optical technology is significant in supporting Lumea's network, as confirmed by Ciena's Regional Managing Director for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, Ivan Polizzi. "We congratulate Lumea on this exciting milestone to offer its customers new service alternatives to market," Polizzi remarked, emphasising the flexibility and innovation made possible through Ciena's optical technology.
