Telecom industry to invest USD $6 billion in QKD by 2030

Yesterday

According to Juniper Research, telecommunications market stakeholders are projected to invest over USD $6 billion in the development and implementation of quantum key distribution (QKD) technologies from 2025 to 2030.

QKD refers to a communication technique using quantum mechanics to generate encryption keys that are impervious to interception, thereby enhancing the security of network communications. This investment is deemed essential due to the increasing capabilities of quantum computing and its potential misuse in intercepting traditional encryption methods, posing a threat to telecom networks, especially for enterprise clients.

The report highlights that the scalability of QKD solutions stands as a major concern for network operators deploying quantum-secure networks on a national scale. The most significant expense associated with QKD is anticipated to be the hardware, such as quantum random number generators required for encryption key generation. This necessitates widespread implementation of quantum-compatible hardware across vast network infrastructures.

As these networks expand, operators are expected to require tools for the real-time management of quantum cryptography. AI-driven network management platforms, noted for optimising traffic routing and resource allocation alongside quantum network simulators, are identified as pivotal value-added technologies.

Michelle Joynson, Research Author at Juniper, commented, "As network operators increasingly monetise their networks through enterprise services, it is imperative that they provide protection against quantum threats in the future. By investing in QKD now, operators position their networks best to capitalise on the growth of enterprise network users."

The research provides a comprehensive overview of the QKD market, with detailed market analysis and forecasts covering more than 60 countries. It offers over 31,000 market statistics over six years, alongside a 'Future Leaders Index' and business model analysis, aiming to explore current and future market opportunities.
