Blancco prevents 107m KG of IT devices from becoming e-waste in a year

Mon, 23rd Oct 2023
FYI, this story is more than a year old

Blancco, a provider of data erasure and mobile lifecycle solutions, has prevented 107m KG of IT devices from turning into e-waste over the past 12 months, according to the company's 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report.

The software was used to erase data from 63.8 million devices from July 2022 to July 2023, demonstrating Blancco's commitment to "erasing data for good."

The latest ESG report cited a record-setting increase in erasing computers, servers and drives as a critical factor in contributing to a more sustainable, circular economy.

Using Blancco's software, companies could avoid physically destroying unwanted or end-of-life IT devices. This enabled these entities to embrace reusing, recycling, donating, or selling the equipment in alignment with circular economy principles.

The saved devices, totalling a mass of 583 jumbo jets, were prevented from entering landfills. The pre-use carbon footprint of these devices, emissions produced from their creation to their first use, is estimated to be 8.3 billion kilograms. This substantial amount would have otherwise been used to create new devices.

Apart from reducing e-waste, Blancco also maintained its carbon-neutral status in FY 2023 while achieving an upgrade to an AA rating on the MSCI ESG Ratings assessment in late 2022. This success can be attributed mainly to the strategic acquisition of WipeDrive at the close of the last financial year, further strengthening Blancco's offerings and bolstering its capabilities to support its customers' data security regulations and environmental impact expectations.

Matt Jones, CEO of Blancco, emphasizes their ongoing commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles, which they made clear three years ago. They are dedicated to meeting the expectations of their customers and employees by maintaining high data security standards, promoting sustainability, and enhancing workforce diversity.

Blancco's ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions while making a positive and lasting impact on their communities as responsible corporate citizens.

Matt Jones says: "Three years ago we made clear our commitments regarding ESG and we did not make those lightly. We continue to challenge ourselves in meeting our customers' and employees' expectations when it comes to maintaining the highest standards of data security, promoting more sustainable practices and working towards increasing the diversity of our workforce."

"At Blancco, we are about 'erasing data for good.' We have the ultimate goal of becoming a net zero business while continuing to be a better corporate citizen that leaves a lasting, positive impact on our communities," says Jones.

The ESG report also mentioned the firm's focus and progress on its diversity and inclusion initiatives. Additionally, Blancco saw zero data breaches in FY 2023 and achieved a customer NPS score of 61.8.

These achievements further highlight the company's commitment to secure data practices and high customer satisfaction. The report aligns with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board's (SASB) industry standard for Software & IT Services, the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
