iOS 26 update sparks surge in complaints over battery drain

Wed, 8th Oct 2025

iPhone users have expressed dissatisfaction after downloading the iOS 26 update, with many citing issues such as rapid battery drain and sluggish device performance.

Technology specialists from mobile phone retailer Becextech report a substantial rise in public concern regarding the update, noting a 251% surge in monthly Google search interest for "iOS 26 issues". The spike in queries highlights a widespread reaction to the latest Apple software release.

User frustration

Reports of problems have circulated online since the rollout of iOS 26, with users describing impacts on daily phone usage ranging from slower app response times to rapidly depleting battery reserves. For many, the experience has prompted warnings to others about proceeding with the update.

Santo Ludy, Managing Director at Becextech, commented on these issues, outlining some of the common factors contributing to users' frustrations:

"With a major update like the iOS 26, it's normal to experience changes in your phone's performance when first downloading the latest release. This includes the most common frustrations users are currently voicing online, such as lagging and draining battery much quickly. "A lot is going on as your phone updates to the newer version. It's indexing all your accumulated files, improving security, downloading new features, and updating applications to ensure compatibility with the latest update. Apple has noted that as your phone processes all of these, it can experience temporary delays in performance, but expect it to subside after a day or so. "For iPhone users, it's advisable to stay up to date with the latest version of the software update, with iOS 26.0.1 now live. This helps maintain the overall health of your device and ensures that your mobile phone's performance and security are optimised to last longer. "Importantly, many iPhone users overlook the 'Tips' application. For optimum performance, ensure that you take the time to learn about the new features that come with the software release, and they're all detailed on that application. It guides users to what is new, along with the best approach to the new features, avoiding any further confusion. "For those experiencing prolonged issues after the update, visit your local mobile phone retailer as they can help you investigate further and advise on the next steps."

Temporary changes

According to Ludy, much of the impact on device behaviour immediately following the update is attributed to the phone completing internal processes. These include re-indexing files, updating security parameters, and ensuring compatibility of apps with the new system. Apple has acknowledged that such disruptions may occur but expects them to lessen within a short period.

Company advice

Becextech has provided practical advice for users continuing to experience issues after updating. The company's recommendations start with closing background applications to reduce strain on processing resources. Users are also advised to avoid using their phones while charging due to the heightened risk of battery drain and overheating.

Another suggestion is to clear cache, cookies, and browsing history. This can ease the phone's processing load as it acclimates to the updated operating system.

For connectivity problems or an unresponsive device, a forced restart is proposed. This can be accomplished by simultaneously holding the lock and one of the volume buttons for a few seconds, then sliding to power off. Users can switch the device back on by holding the lock button until the Apple logo appears.

Update recommendations

Ludy underscores the importance of keeping devices updated, noting that subsequent releases beyond iOS 26, such as iOS 26.0.1, are intended to enhance device longevity and security. Consulting the built-in 'Tips' application is encouraged for a better understanding of new features and how to utilise them effectively.

For persistent difficulties, Ludy reiterates the value of seeking professional advice at local mobile retailers, who can assess devices and recommend further steps if necessary.
